Metabolic syndrome is a group of health conditions that put you at greater risk of heart disease and stroke – collectively known as cardiovascular disease – and type 2 diabetes. The main symptoms are abdominal obesity (a fat tummy), raised fat levels in the blood, high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels.
Metabolic syndrome not only increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it also makes people more prone to cognitive decline and depression.
Vegans have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome as they tend to have a healthier weight as well as better blood sugar and fat levels. This may be due to antioxidants and fibre rich foods, mainly fruits and vegetables and wholegrains but research shows that other plant-based foods such as nuts and pulses help too.
